About SELF
Our Mission
SELF is wellness you can trust. We help you take good care of yourself, your loved ones, and your community. No matter the platform, our work reflects this service-driven mission and the core values of inclusivity, accuracy, autonomy, and empathy. We recognize that wellness is as much about self-expression and self-compassion as it is about workout classes and healthy eating; that it’s not all-or-nothing; and that every person’s individual goals for wellness are different, and that’s great. We also recognize that personal health is intimately connected to community health, and that better health outcomes often require systemic change. We’re all in this together, and SELF is here for you.
SELF reaches over 20 million people each month across a wide range of platforms, including web, video, and social media. SELF is recognized as a global thought leader in health content and has won numerous awards, including a National Magazine Award, Webby’s People’s Voice award, MM&M Gold Award; plus appeared on Adweek’s Hot List and Ad Age’s Publisher’s A-List. SELF’s Editor in Chief has been honored as Digital Editor of the Year by the 2018 Folio: Digital Awards, as well as a 2018 Changemaker by Digiday.
Who We Are
The SELF editorial team is composed of a diverse group of individuals with a wide range of reporting and editing backgrounds. The varying viewpoints and unique opinions of each person on the team help drive SELF’s content to be among the best and most respected health content published today.
Here’s a look at our team’s leadership:
Jessica Cruel is the editor in chief of Allure and SELF, where she leads the development of multiplatform editorial content for digital, social and video platforms. At Allure, she spearheaded the launch of The Melanin Edit, a new platform celebrating all things relating to Black beauty, and the annual Best of Beauty LIVE event.
In her decade-long career, Jessica previously served as deputy beauty director at Refinery29 and held editorial roles at SELF and Popsugar. She is a graduate of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill with degrees in multimedia journalism and sociology. Jessica currently resides in Newark, New Jersey. When she's not leading Allure and SELF, she can be found hoarding candles, slathering on serum, and lifting barbells at the gym.
Alessandra Foresto is the managing editor of Allure and SELF, where she leads editorial operations and cross-brand collaboration, drives innovative business growth, and ensures execution of content, partnerships, and special projects.
With over 15 years of experience, Alessandra previously served as chief of staff for Vox Media’s Lifestyle Group working on Popsugar, Eater, Thrillist, and Punch. She held several operations and editorial roles at Popsugar, serving as the content director for the parenting, fitness, and lifestyle verticals and as the founding editor of Popsugar’s first Latinx vertical in 2016. Before that, she was a beauty editor and writer at several publications.
Her writing for O, The Oprah Magazine’s “Hair Extravaganza” won a 2014 National Magazine Award for leisure interests, and her feature on Dr. Oz The Good Life, “Oooh…I Love That Scent,” won a 2016 The Fragrance Foundation Award for editorial excellence in fragrance coverage—article.
